Sibylle of Cleves was a German noblewoman who was born in 1512 and died in 1554. She was the daughter of Johann III, Duke of Cleves, and Maria of Jülich-Berg. She was married twice, first to John Frederick, Elector of Saxony, and then to William the Rich, Duke of Jülich-Cleves-Berg.
Sibylle was known for her piety and her support of the Protestant Reformation. She was a close friend of Katharina von Bora, the wife of Martin Luther. Sibylle and her first husband, John Frederick, were supporters of Luther and helped to establish the Protestant faith in Saxony.
After John Frederick's death, Sibylle married William the Rich. The marriage was arranged to unite the territories of Jülich-Cleves-Berg and Brandenburg. However, the marriage was not a happy one, and Sibylle and William were known to have frequent disagreements.
Sibylle is also famous for her portrait by Hans Holbein the Younger. The portrait, which was painted in 1539, shows Sibylle in full regalia and has been described as one of the most beautiful portraits of the Renaissance.
